Safe transportation

Packing and transportation

  • Materials must be packaged in sturdy, non-leaking containers no larger than 5 gallons.
  • Make sure products are properly sealed in their original containers.
  • If a product does not have its original label, label it only if you are sure of the contents.
  • Do not mix products.
  • Small, leaking containers can be placed in resealable plastic bags. Larger containers should go into covered, non-leaking secondary containers for transport.
  • Place containers into boxes lined with plastic garbage bags.
  • Five-gallon plastic buckets make good transporting containers.

How to transport: Place the materials upright in your vehicle and brace them so they will not slip or tip over. For safety, transport the materials in your vehicle's trunk or truck bed, away from the passenger compartment.

NOTE: State regulations limit the transportation of household hazardous waste to 15 gallons of liquid or 125 pounds of solid material per vehicle per visit. Individual containers are limited to a 5-gallon capacity. There are no limitations on the number of visits per day to drop off hazardous waste.
